ACADEMIC PROGRESS POLICY FOR FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS
Federal and state regulations require that students receiving financial aid maintain satisfactory academic progress. The policies governing satisfactory academic progress and the effect of these regulations on students receiving financial aid at Eastern School of Acupuncture are described below.
All Eastern School of Acupuncture students enrolled in the Diploma in Acupuncture program must meet minimum standards of satisfactory academic progress. Both qualitative and quantitative measures are utilized to determine satisfactory progress. Academic progress is evaluated twice per year at the end of each semester. A student's entire record will be reviewed. Students who do not meet minimum standards may be ineligible for future financial aid disbursements and are subject to dismissal. Transfer credits from other institutions will be counted in the total hours for determining the maximum time frame of their educational program.
Students who fail the year end comprehensive exam upon retake are required to pay and retake both courses again. They must also retake and pass the comprehensive exam before advancing to the next level of academic studies.
Academic Probation and Appeal Procedure
Any student who fails to meet the minimum qualitative or quantitative measures will be placed on academic and financial aid probation for the subsequent term. Students placed on probation are considered making satisfactory academic progress during the probationary term and may continue to receive eligible disbursements of financial aid. The probation period consists of a semester in which the student must meet the minimum standards. If the minimum qualitative and quantitative measures are met at the end of the probationary semester, the student will be removed; if not, the student is subject to dismissal from the school.
Any student who is denied financial aid or who is subject to dismissal from the college for not meeting the standards of satisfactory academic progress may appeal that decision in writing to the Chief Executive Officer. The appeal must be filed prior to the start of the subsequent term.
Final determination will be made by a committee comprised of the Chief Executive Officer, Academic Dean, Director of Financial Aid, and a member of the Board of Governors. Students will be notified in writing of the decision of the committee. If an appeal is approved, the student is considered to be making satisfactory academic progress and will remain eligible to continue in the program and receive financial aid. Probationary status, however, continues for that term. If the student then fails to meet the standards of satisfactory academic progress, the student is dismissed from the school.
If an appeal is denied, the student will be ineligible for financial aid and is subject to dismissal. Students are dismissed from the school for a period of at least one term. Students may apply for reinstatement in writing to the school's Chief Executive Officer. Students granted reinstatement must have paid the school all previously incurred tuition and fee charges. Reinstated students will be considered to be making satisfactory academic progress but are enrolled on probationary status.
